A honeybee can recognize individual human faces—not because its brain is huge, but because it uses a kind of “configural processing” similar to ours, grouping facial features into a whole. It’s impressive because honeybees have about one-millionth the number of neurons humans do.
Many people don’t know that honey never spoils. Archaeologists have found pots of honey in ancient Egyptian tombs that are over 3,000 years old and still edible.
The reason is honey’s low water content and high acidity, which make it hostile to bacteria and microbes.
Here’s one: octopuses have three hearts, and two of them stop beating while they swim.
The main heart pumps blood around the body, but when an octopus swims, the other two hearts temporarily pause. This is one reason octopuses often prefer crawling over swimming—it’s less tiring.
