Humans are actually bioluminescent—you literally glow.
Your body constantly emits a tiny amount of visible light due to chemical reactions (specifically, free radicals produced during cell respiration) happening inside your cells.
The catch is that this light is about 1,000 times weaker than the human eye can perceive, so we don't notice it. Scientists have only been able to confirm this using ultra-sensitive cameras that can detect individual photons in complete darkness.
Humans actually have stripes, similar to tigers, but they are usually invisible to the naked eye.
They are called Blaschko’s lines. They trace the paths that cells took while you were developing in the womb. You usually can't see them because your skin pigmentation is uniform, but they can become visible under UV light or due to certain skin conditions, revealing distinct V-shapes on the back and swirling S-shapes on the chest and abdomen.
This is the hardest game to play with a stranger, but I will try my best.
Here are three things from different fields—hopefully, at least one is new to you.
1. The Biological Timeline Twist
Sharks are older than trees.
Sharks have been swimming in the oceans for about 450 million years. The earliest trees (like the Wattieza) didn't appear on land until about 385 million years ago.
Furthermore, sharks are also older than Saturn’s rings. While Saturn is old, recent data from the Cassini spacecraft suggests its rings might only be 10 to 100 million years old, meaning sharks were swimming around on Earth for millions of years before Saturn got its iconic look.
2. The "Victorian Internet" of Paris
We tend to think of instant messaging as a modern invention, but in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, major cities like London, New York, and especially Paris had massive, complex networks of pneumatic tubes running under their streets.
In Paris, the poste pneumatique network stretched for over 250 miles. You could write a short note (a "petit bleu"), put it in a canister, drop it off at a station, and compressed air would shoot it through the tubes to another station across the city. It was faster than the mail and cheaper than a telegram. At its peak, the Paris network handled over 10 million tubes a year. It wasn't fully shut down until 1984.
3. The Definition of a "Moment"
While we use the word "moment" loosely today to mean a short, undefined period of time, it used to be a precise medieval unit of time measurement.
A "moment" was defined as 1/40th of a solar hour. Because the length of an hour varied depending on the season in medieval timekeeping, the length of a moment varied too. However, on average, an actual "moment" lasted exactly 90 seconds.
